Lk 15:1-3, 11-32
So to them Jesus addressed this parable. “A man had two sons, and the younger son said to his father, ‘Father, give me the share of your estate that should come to me.’ So the father divided the property between them. After a few days, the younger son collected all his belongings and set off to a distant country where he squandered his inheritance on a life of dissipation. When he had freely spent everything, a severe famine struck that country, and he found himself in dire need. So he hired himself out to one of the local citizens..."
There is so much that God wishes to teach us through the parable of the Prodigal Son. Today, let us meditate on this one line: "So he hired himself out to one of the local citizens"
We know the young man came from a rich family : "(he) collected all his belongings and set off to a distant country where he squandered his inheritance on a life of dissipation." He had enough money to leave, to travel and to overindulgence in sensual pleasures. There is another side to this rude young man, who disrespected his father. "He hired himself out to one of the local citizens." When he became penniless, he knew what to do. He was familiar with hard work. He had a strong foundation.
So too with us. We must cultivate a strong foundation through a solid relationship with God. We must pray, and meditate and seek to understand the teachings of the Catholic faith. Then, if we squander the gifts from God, we too will know what to do. We can return to Our Father and do the hard work, including reparation and penance.
God is always loving, He is always merciful, and He is always waiting. We simply need to trust, and return to Him.
Our Lady of Victories , pray for us.
