Lk 5:33-39 “No one tears a piece from a new cloak to patch an old one. Otherwise, he will tear the new and the piece from it will not match the old cloak. Likewise, no one pours new wine into old wineskins. Otherwise, the new wine will burst the skins, and it will be spilled, and the skins will be ruined. Rather, new wine must be poured into fresh wineskins."
People can get "set in their ways". This idiom is often associated with older people, but anyone - any age- can get "set in their ways". Any age can get stubborn, can resist change, and can desire to live according to one's own established patterns. In our Spiritual life, we can also become SET IN OUR OWN WAYS. We can believe that We Know Best. Without proper care, our Spiritual life can become like old, thin wineskins, weakened by sin and spiritual sloth. Do we meditate on GOD'S Word everyday? Do we offer everything to GOD everyday? Do we ask GOD how HE wants us to live everyday? When we think we have all of the answers; Or when we think we are too busy to ask...Our soul becomes an old wineskin. Our soul becomes tattered and weakened by sin: the sin of pride, the sin of sloth, the sin of self reliance.
When we do not cultivate a relationship with GOD; when we think that one hour on Sunday is sufficient, then we are trying to pour new wine (GOD'S Word) into old wineskins (our soul). We are trying to place a new patch, on an old opening- but it's just a patch. It will not match. It will not take hold. The Pharisees were SET IN THEIR WAYS. They did not want to change. They could not see the TRUTH. Their souls were old wineskins. They were unwilling to accept the New Wine from Jesus. They were unwilling to be transformed into something NEW. Let's look at the cross and ask if we are old wineskins, or if we desire to be transformed into something NEW. Are we ready and eager to accept HIS NEW WINE?
